PRELUDE TO THE WORKSHOP: STELARC IN BARCELONA___CaixaForum
in CaixaForum - Avda. Marqués de Comillas 6-8 08038 Barcelona - Tel: (+34) 93 495 39 45 - Metro Espanya - www.laCaixa.es/ObraSocial

Saturday 15th: Stelarc -Presentation
organised by REVERSO

ZOMBIE, CYBORG & PHANTOM BODIES The projects and performances explore alternate anatomical architectures realized as prosthetic attachments, robotic extensions, surgical alterations and avatar surrogates. There is an increasing proliferation of prosthetic parts, plastinated bodies and partially living entities. The body increasingly performs as a component in extended technological systems. Its awareness is extruded and its operation is extended into the realm of the alternate, the involuntary and the alien. The split body becomes a host for remote agents and generates phantom presence. It becomes both a possessed and performing body.

Monday 17th: 15'30 - reception of the participants -AULAS
16'00 - Jaime del Val - REVERSO -workshop -AULAS - spanish/english
Reduced Reality and Obsolete Bodies: biopolitics and technopositivism in latecapitalism - Picking up on Stelarc's most quoted sentence "the body is obsolete", the discussion will take us through the ways in which biopolitics operates in latecapitalism: through assuming a technopositivistic and carthesian framework of representations and imitations of "reality", that is of an already reduced representation of reality, hiperreal fictions of the global and parodies of universality induce an increasing process of formalisations of the body, of reality, of being, whereas reality and the body, per se, cannot ever be reduced completely.
Discussion of texts proposed for reading and work with the 3D Motion Capture System.
18'30 - Stelarc - Seminar -AULAS - english

Tuesday 18th: 16'00 - Jaime del Val - REVERSO - workshop -AULAS - spanish/english
Politics of the body in post-postmodernism: postperformativity, postqueer, post-posthuman, post-postcolonial, post-postporn... - A revision of different discourses around the body will take us to resituate performativity and queer theory, the post-human, postcolonialism, to mention just a few, within the framework of the society of standardisation, in which the biopolitical paradigm works through assimiltation of difference, through parody, which thus has become the technology par excellance of the "empire". This, confronted with an enlarged view of corporeality as multidimentional and contigent communication field, and with a number of non-verbal forms of communication that outreach the logos, will serve to look into new paradigms for the analysis of power and possible strategies of resistance.
Discussion of texts proposed for reading and work with the 3D Motion Capture System.
18'30 - Allucquére Rosanne (Sandy) Stone - Seminar -AULAS - english
Indiana Stone and the Rollercoaster of Doom: Tears, joy, and near-death experiences from a life of dancing on the cracks between art, tech, performance, and theory.

Wednesday 19th: 16'00 - Jaime del Val - REVERSO - workshop -AULAS -spanish/english
Intensive bodies: from embodiment end enaction to morphogenesis and metaformativity - From non-verbal communication, through the arts, to accounts of embodiment and enaction, the day will take us through new conceptualisations of the body as field of intensities, rather than as materiality, and we will try to understand these intensities as communicating forces that operate on a multiplicity of layers, whose interplay with the unthinkable accounts for the emergence of new form.
Presentations of ideas and projects of participants and work with the 3D Motion Capture System.
18'00 - Donald Glowinski - InfoMus Lab (University of Genoa)- EyesWeb Workshop -AULAS - english
InfoMus Lab - EYESWEB WORKSHOP - The course will focus on different uses of EyesWeb in both visual and audio field. It aims at sharing with participants the InfoMus Lab's experience in scientific and technological developments as well as in artistic production matured around the EyesWeb project. The EyesWeb project focuses on different aspects of non-verbal multimodal communication, including human full-body movement and musical gesture, and aims at understanding the affective, expressive content gesture conveys. The project is centred on an open hardware and software platform, EyesWeb 5 XMI, for developing real-time multimedia applications characterised by multimodal interaction. Research and development in the EyesWeb project are partially supported by several EU-IST and national projects. This course aims at providing artists with the opportunity to master and explore in detail the EyesWeb project and open platform. Participants will be introduced to the different aspects of the EyesWeb project - from design to implementation of experience-centric mediated interactive systems.

THE AUGMENTED BODY, PERFORMING THE IMPLICIT GESTURES
By Rudolfo Quintas, music by André Gonçalves and Software Collaboration by Damian Stewart
In this Augmented Reality performance we propose to visualize and augment the gesture's implicit messages in order to achieve an out-of-body experience also known as 'Astral Projection'*. The Body, as concept research and sensory place, is a central element, were the visual and musical contents emerge in dynamic feedback adaptation between the performer and the system.
*Astral projection (or astral travel) is an interpretation of an out-of-body experience achieved either awake or via lucid dreaming or deep meditation. The concept of astral projection assumes the existence of another body, separate from the physical body and capable of travelling non-physical planes. Commonly such planes are called astral or spiritual. Astral projection is construed in terms of the spirit or astral body leaving the physical body to travel in the spirit world or astral plane. The concept of astral projection has been familiar for thousands of years, dating back to ancient China and other ancient cultures.

Thursday 20th: 16'00 - Jaime del Val - REVERSO - workshop -AULAS spanish/english
Emergent languages: Instruments, Hyperinstruments and Metabodies - Today we shall take a quick overview at instruments (old and new), from traditional musical instruments, to software and hardware, Virtual Reality interfaces, hyperinstruments and tools for interactive dance, in order to have an overview of the horizon of possibilities to rethink the body as communicating technology, and to redefine the relations between existing disciplines and territories, artisitic, discursive or normative, that define the boundaries of corporeality such as we may think it. The notion of tool as a blank sheet at the service of pure creativity will be put into question: every tool, every technique, has embedded forms of thinking, though contingent and changing ones, that partially condition its nature within specific contexts. How do we think digital technologies, how have we assumed certain languages and styles embedded in them, how can we rethink them in specific contexts and with regard to other older media and disciplines into new hybrid fields of relations? Which are the political implications of an instrument, after all, its political economy?
Demos: "Morphogenesis" and "Microdances" - After introducing the activities of REVERSO and the past and coming projects, It is time for some demos of the instrument designed by Jaime del Val_REVERSO for Morphogenesis, for interactive dance, electroacoustics, video and virtual generative architechture, followed by a demo of the use of wireless cameras on the body in the project Microdances and a screening of one of the Microdances films.

18'00 - Daniel Schorno -STEIM Seminar -AULAS - english
STEIM Seminar - an introduction to a selection of STEIM projects, eponymous instrument design and the real-time sensor and sound manipulation softwares 'JunXion' and 'LiSa', by Daniel Schorno.
For more than three decades STEIM has been a centre for research & development of instruments & tools for performers in the electronic performance arts, functioning as a laboratory, workshop, international meeting place, artist hotel and production office for live electroacoustic music, DJ's, VJ's, theatre and installation makers, video artists, composers and as nomad studio. The seminar will give a little taste of all this. http://www.steim.org

20'00- Rudolfo Quintas - Seminar - AULAS - english
The Augmented Body: Body Processed Environments as Astral Projection
This is an emerging theory that is exploring the experience of the body in interactive environments, such as interactive performance Installations and Dance, as an Astral Projection*. An Astral Projection is when one feels living an experience out-of-body. The Augmented Body becomes a concept that visions to build experiences were the sensorial space of the body is projected to an other environment. Here the person behaves with fewer constraints because her consciousness is also projected. New paths of movement emerge, a physical wisdom often lost in our technological society.

Friday 21st: 16'00 Laura Cañete -Vídeodance Seminar -AULAS - spanish
A dialogue between the camera and the body- Videodance is a hybrid genre in between audiovisuals and dance/movement. Both disciplines work in collaboration without anyone being subdued to the other. We will show some works that go from the explosion of videodance in the US in the 60's to the French revolution in the 80's and to British experimentation in the 80's, until the take off in Latin-American countries in the 90's.
18'00 Roberta Bosco - Seminar on Net-Art and the body -AULAS -spanish
Bodies in the Net - in internet, the disembodied space par excellance, the body is one of the themes, scenarios and tools preferred by artists. Represented, reinvented, connected, altered or transformed into a navigable space, the body wants to lose its physical limitations to become a new interface between the physical and the virtual world. A brief exposition of the evolution of the relations between body, art and internet, through some of the most representative artists of diverse approaches.
20'00 Jaime del Val - REVERSO - workshop -AULAS - spanish/english
The world after parody: aesthetical and political challenges in the era of standardisation - After the net-art seminar of Roberta Bosco, the final debate, rather than giving answers, will try to wrap up some of the threads of the week into a number of productive questions for future work, concentrating on the issue of strategies both aesthetical and political: in a world of constant assimilations in which parody has become the style of the system, it is maybe necessary to develop specific technologies of the body that counteract the increasing standardisation of all domains of life, technologies that articulate the radical opennes of reality and corporeality, in a complex space of conflict of the local and specific with the fiction of the global, in a radical confrontotaion of new media with ecology and in an attept to produce sustainable techologies of the body and the territory... as well as succesful strategies of resistance.
21'30 - Closing of the workshop

METABODIES/ANTIBODIES is a metaformance (an interactive performance-installation-intervention-workshop) from the series Morphogenesis, of the project FRONTIER BODIES of the Institute REVERSO.

It is a poetic space of abstraction in which the movement, image and the voice of the performers become a undiscernible landscape, a trail of the dissolving self, a liquid architechture in the frontier of the intelligible. The public will be active participant in this intimate and open space, incorporating the skin of the participants in this open landscape of meta-representations.

In the heart of Spain, that is leader of urban speculation in the world, and of its processes of standardisation of bodies, destruction of the territory and cultural erasure, the following questions are dimly raised: ¿Ca we be antibodies in the empire of representations? ¿Can we resist the logos of standardisation? ¿Are we standard bodies or are we already always resisting assimilation at some point?
